The Phoenix Development Council is proud to introduce Blazing Wings of Dreams, a new art statue that stands as a symbol of resilience, pride, and community spirit in North Tulsa. Created by local artist Trueson Daugherty with direct input from our neighborhood, this interactive sculpture invites residents and visitors alike to experience the powerful symbolism of a phoenix rising.

The Vision of Blazing Wings of Dreams

From the start, Blazing Wings of Dreams was envisioned as more than just a statue—it’s a reflection of the Phoenix District’s journey. Through open community meetings, locals discussed themes that resonated deeply with the neighborhood, ultimately choosing the image of a phoenix, a symbol of renewal and strength.

Trueson Daugherty, a talented Tulsa-based artist known for his work in painting, sculpture, and performance, was selected to bring this vision to life. With a passion for combining art with community storytelling, Trueson crafted a design featuring soaring wings that appear to rise from flames, inviting anyone who stands in front to "wear" the wings in photos. His goal was to create a statue that would inspire pride, connection, and creativity in all who interact with it.

A Community-Driven Project

The journey to install Blazing Wings of Dreams was filled with community participation at every stage, making this Tulsa art statue truly unique:

1. Design and Selection: The community was involved from the very beginning, helping to shape the concept and choose the final design. Trueson worked closely with the Phoenix District to ensure that the sculpture captured the district’s spirit and story.
2. Patina Party: As part of the process, residents were invited to a Patina Party, where they scrubbed the metal sculpture with a non-toxic solution to give it its rich, rustic finish. This hands-on activity allowed community members to directly contribute to the look of the sculpture.
3. Concrete Pouring & Handprints in the Base: When the concrete base was poured, community members added their handprints around the foundation, leaving a lasting mark on the statue that symbolizes the hands that built, nurtured, and supported the Phoenix District.
4. Installation Day Block Party: On October 12, we held a joyous block party to celebrate the installation of the statue. Hosted by Crossover Impact in their parking lot, the event was filled with music, food from Bobby Ray’s Southern BBQ and Frios Gourmet Pops, and a true sense of community unity. It was a day that brought everyone together to celebrate this incredible new landmark.

Located Just Off the Osage Trail

You can find Blazing Wings of Dreams just off the Osage Trail at 36th St. North. The next time you’re out on your bike or walking the trail, stop by to see the statue up close and capture your own “wings” photo.
